The shade you used to buy without looking
There was a long stretch when none of this required any thought. You knew your color by name, or at least by the number stamped into the bottom of the tube, and you replaced it on the way past the counter the way you replace batteries.
That is a good arrangement while it holds. It is a habit with a price tag rather than a decision.
Then one unremarkable morning you put it on and something sat wrong. Nothing dramatic. The color was the same color it had always been, and it simply did not read as you. It is the feeling of a coat you loved for six winters looking like a costume in the seventh.
You wore it out of the house anyway. Almost everyone does, the first few times.
Nothing went wrong with the lipstick
This is worth saying plainly, because after a while the drawer starts to look like an accusation. The formula did not turn on you. You did not develop bad judgment.
Preferences move, and they move everywhere else in the closet without anyone treating it as a problem. You wear less jewelry than you used to, or more. Your hair is a different length. The print you would have bought on sight four years ago stays on the rack now, and you do not stand in the aisle wondering what happened to you. You walk past it and think about lunch.
Lip color is the one item we quietly expect to hold still. Maybe because it was the last thing most of us learned before the routine settled, and the routine has been running unexamined ever since. So when it stops fitting, it does not feel like a change of preference. It feels like a small private failure.

Buying lipstick asks for the name of a color first
Then comes the replacement, and the replacement is where a lot of people leave the category for good.
Every lipstick counter, every website, every shade card asks you the same opening question, and it asks it before anything else can happen. Which color. Rose, berry, brick, the number on the bottom of the tube. That question is effortless while your taste is settled and close to unanswerable while it is moving. You are being asked to say who you are this year at the exact moment you are least sure, and the only reference point you have is the shade you have already stopped reaching for.
So you buy something in the neighborhood of the old one, because the neighborhood of the old one is all you have to navigate by. At home it turns out to be a slightly different version of the thing that was not working.
Do that twice and the drawer fills up. Do it four times and the reasonable response is to stop buying lipstick altogether, which is also how you end up missing it.
A different place to start
There is another way to put color on a lip, and it does not begin by naming a shade.

You apply it straight from the bullet, the way you always have. The pigment is carried in a balm base of squalane, jojoba seed oil and vitamin E. You keep the tube with the things you reach for while you are getting ready, and that is the entire routine.
Here is what it does and does not do. The tint that develops is a soft one, and how it looks varies from person to person, so the first application is where you find out where you stand. It needs reapplying through the day, the same as any lip color you have ever owned. And it does not produce a specific bold shade: there is no red to request and no plum to specify.
What it offers instead is color you can wear without deciding, in advance, which color you are this year. For a drawer that is already full of perfectly reasonable decisions that never became habits, that is a different proposition from a tenth tube.
